HateFu! The Tanking Trainer for World of Warcraft

Apr 23, 2007 by Graeme in Uncategorized

I’ve a confession to make. I’m a bit obsessed with World of Warcraft addons. I spend more time tweaking my UI than I do hunting Murloc. Before the release of The Burning Crusade, one of my favourite addons was HateMe! which calculated what a tank should do to generate the highest possible amount of aggro (and later, DPS) on his target. It effectively let casual players do almost as good a tanking job as the hardcore just by mashing one key. It was still necessary for the player to pick the right target and use other talents such as Challenging Shout that the addon didn’t.

But, The Burning Crusade brought version 2.01 of the World of Warcraft client and addons could no longer cast any spells or perform actions on the player’s behalf, which meant that HateMe! was broken for good. This presented a bit of a problem for me as I’d never really learned to tank manually…

So I took the HateMe! code (the latest version I could find was Somna’s) and made it work in an advisory capacity only. The tooltip (detachable, so you can park it next to your other important stuff) tells you what HateMe! would have done at any given point in time. Then it’s up to you to do what it suggests, or not.

It’s still a little rough and ready (I need to work out the correct scope for many of it’s variables, finish the conversion to Ace and FuBar, and give proper credit to the original authors) but it works. You’ll find it attached to this post for now, but when I think it’s good enough it’ll appear on WowAce (Subversion FTW!) and possibly other popular addon sites.
