I have an Orange SPV M5000 (a.k.a. HTC Universal) which I’ve been using with Vodafone for a while. Last week the missus signed up for T-Mobile’s Web & Walk, took her Windows Mobile 2005 device (I forget which one it is, exactly) into the T-Mobile shop where the helpful assistant entered the settings required for internet access. Now she has Windows Messenger, web browsing, and everything else you’d expect. It feels just like WiFi - very nice…
Now… I checked with Vodafone and they have no public plans to launch a similar service, so I looked at the other networks. T-Mobile is no good for me because the coverage is very poor where I work. But then I heard about 3’s X-Series.
I signed up and received a Nokia N73 today. It’s staying in the box because I like my current phone and I assumed I’d be able to connect to the internet with it, but no luck so far. I’ve put the SIM card in and can make calls and send/receive SMS messages. It’s a 3G phone and says I’m connected to UTMS.
I tried setting the access point name to three.co.uk (as mentioned here) and that allows me to visit mobile.three.co.uk, but if I visit anything else I get a message saying I have to use my 3 handset, or that I have to purchase internet time. Not good.
From this point I see 2 possible futures:
- I’m just missing the settings I need in order to connect just like the wife does on T-Mobile. Once I have those it works great - I’m happy and gladly pay Three for a fine service. Life is good.
- Three’s service turns out to be nothing like T-Mobile’s and isn’t a true internet service. Three want to have control over what I can do (what’s this about a wall?) and I can only visit sites or use services that have their blessing. I return the unopened handset to Three and look elsewhere. T-Mobile get a lot of new customers.
I really hope that it’s the first scenario, but after poking around a bit I fear I’ll have to give up and consider T-Mobile, despite it’s flaws.
I also posted this here where I hope to get an answer!
