Standard for remote network control of home AV devices

Sep 22, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

CNet:

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) trade group on Monday said it is publishing a user interface standard that uses Web browser-based communications to provide access to and control of networked components–such as a personal computer or digital video recorder–through the main TV screen from a single remote control.

The technology, dubbed CEA-2027, is unlike most previous home networking standards, CEA said, because it supports full control of any networked device, including all of its unique functions defined by the device manufacturer.

It’s about time! My Page digibox had an ethernet port on it years ago, and although it was just for a cable modem connection I used to fantasise dream think about controlling it from my PC. That day may yet come! (via eHomeUpgrade)

Shouldn’t laugh, I know

In one of those "life is a sitcom" moments, it seems that my sister-in-law’s home telephone number has been entered into the Thompson Local directory (like the Yellow Pages) for our area as the number for a local funeral director.

Genius. It took me a good 5 minutes to stop laughing. :D

BTW - She assures me she’s being very tactful with the resulting calls.

eBay the DJ

Well, the time has finally come. Way back before I became married, with children, I used to be a bit of a bedroom DJ, and so for a long time I collected records. Lots of records. Way too many records (in my wife’s opinion, at least). I have hundreds of 12" singles and albums in the garage, and I’m going to list them all on eBay over the coming weeks, starting today.

So if you’re into any kind of dance music (there really is a bit of everything), stay tuned! :)

Eidos Interactive announced Championship Manager Online to the City early this morning, promising to launch the subscription-only "massively multiplayer online football management simulation" at www.cm-online.com in January 2005.

That should keep Sir Bobby and myself busy for a while.
