Details on Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth support

Monday, March 15th, 2004 @ 5:10 am | Uncategorized

Here’s some more news about Windows XP SP2’s support for Bluetooth, this time straight from Microsoft:

Bluetooth

What does Bluetooth do?

Bluetooth® is a wireless networking technology available in a wide variety of devices. Support for Bluetooth wireless technology is included in Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. This support was not previously available directly from Microsoft. It is included now because customers requested that this technology be added to the core Windows operating system.

Some of the features that are included in this release are support for PAN (personal area networking using Internet Protocol over Bluetooth), Hard Copy Replacement Profile (HCRP) for printing, dial-up networking, Host Interface Device (HID), object push, and virtual COM ports. Support for selective suspend and boot-mode keyboards (based on specifically configured hardware) is also included.

If no Bluetooth transceiver is present on the system, there is no change to the system’s behavior. When a Bluetooth device that is approved by the Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) is present, Bluetooth support is enabled. When Bluetooth support is enabled, you can find changes in the Network Connections section in Control Panel. A new Control Panel item called Bluetooth Devices has also been added. In addition, you can find the new Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard by clicking Start, pointing to Accessories, and pointing to Communications.

If an existing non-Microsoft Bluetooth network driver is installed, upgrading to Service Pack 2 for Windows XP does not cause the existing driver to be replaced. It can be replaced later, either manually or programmatically.

For complete documentation on Bluetooth in Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, see online Help.

I find it horrible, coz i’cant use my vendor bluetooth driver (i use billionton blutooth dongle), windows recognize it as nano sierra bluetooth device. now i have activate the bluetooth device everytime i want to send file from my phone (by using the wizard, send and receive file) while before i only have to send the file via bluetooth and my phone automaticaly detect my pc (when i still using using my billionton driver)

  2. 2 Anonymous on June 14, 2004 3:56 am

Nasty. Are you sure you can’t use your vendor drivers? I have SP2 installed and my TDK Systems WIDCOMM drivers work fine.

Can anyone tell me where I can download a driver for a Billionton Bluetooth USB Dongle (USBBTC1A-B).

I am having no luck with the billionton website as I purchased the dongle on EBay with no CD and they only have updates to the drivers supplied on CD.

    Thanks BRENT.

I have the same Bluetooth usb.  Its a Widcomm BT-222.  Widcomm was recently taken over by Broadcom.  Both searchable on the web.

I plugged in a belkin bluetooth usb stick and windows XP recognised it immediately. However no services were offered (as in zero). I had to load the belkin software and remove the xp driver to get the audio in and out on a bluetooth headset to work. So while xp may recognise and configure the device it doesnt sem to make it usable for much.

I have exactly the same problem. I plug in my Typhoon Bluetooth Dongle and XP recognizes it immediately. The I pair my Headset with my computer, but no services are offered. Now I just need to find out, how to replace the XP SP2 Bluetooth driver with my manufactor driver..

  19. 19 Anonymous on October 2, 2004 3:16 pm

Bluetooth Device wizard?  I cant find the contol panel Item "Bluetooth Device" when I connect my bluetooth tranciever.  I am trying to install the Microsoft Optical Elite Desktop set for Bluetooth and I get stuck at the step which tells me to go to the Bluetooth Device item in Control Panel.  I have also tried the run command bthprops.cpl and no luck.  I have also found the file and tried to open no luck.  Has someone had this problem and if so how did you overcome it?

  20. 20 Anonymous on October 4, 2004 3:35 pm

Yeah, I had this problem too. I’m not quite sure how it happened, but the only way I could solve it was to use System Restore to go back to the day before I installed the dongle, and start again.

  21. 21 Anonymous on October 5, 2004 6:05 pm

I don’t think XP bluetooth driver support audio profile. I would stick with the manufacturer’s driver.

Belkin F8T001uk v2 (Widcomm) Bluetooth USB Adapter Dongle Not Recognised by the Computer as a New USB Device

I have a Sony Desktop Computer PCV-RX1 with Win XP and SP2 from Microsoft Windows installed (but the dongle was not recognised before or after I installed it). I have no license problem.

I can install the drivers (Widcomm) and the ones from the CD (Belkin) without any problem. But my computer just won’t recognised the USB Bluetooth Dongle. Whatever I do, when I plug it in after installing the drivers, it does not recognise a new USB Device.

I tried to Add a new Hardware, using the Widcomm drivers. I also tried with “I Have the Disk” and then point to the BIN folder of the Widcomm or Belkin Drivers on my hard drive (depending on which one I tried). Nothing makes the computer recognise the Bluetooth Device. Any idea?

Note: it works perfectly well with my portable computer which recognised it instantly.

  29. 29 Anonymous on October 13, 2004 11:55 am

Thank you, I have now solved my problem. The plastic around my USB port prevented the device from being completely inserted. I have plugged the device on the USB port at the back of my computer and it was recognised instantly.

SP2 does not have a profile for headset support (HS). you will have to use the bluetooth-stack that came with your bluetooth adapter (if it is a usb-stick it is most likely some incarnation of widcomm software)you would then have to replace the “generic bluetooth radio” driver in device-mgr. with the one represented by the btwusb.inf on your usb-stick-manufacturers disk. it works although reliability of widcomm software is an issue.

Ok I’m a newb to BT(bluetooth), but the widcomm driver problems i’ve been having with XP SP2 are realy frustrating, OK i’m only using a LINKSYS BT Dongle, and a Jabra250 BT headset both checked out on Jons Bluetooth guide http://www.jonsguides.com/bluetooth/index.html .The biggest problem to start with are this. Half way through the CD setup it asks you to Connect the Bluetooth device, on doing so XP jumps in as I click ok on the software CD, before the cd setup can finish the XP Drivers are now ready to use :( .Except the Windows drivers dosn’t support headsets!!?? its 2004 Microsoft! they just don’t want us using SKYPE, depsite the properties saying its working properly. LINKSYS in there wisdom have compressed the setup so that the drivers arn’t available for manual updateing of drivers, So my friend who has the exact same devices sent me the 2 main WIDCOMM drivers which i placed in C:\windows\system32\drivers and swapped them around in device manager . It worked! once :/ after rebooting I’m now stuck with NO AUDIO, although they are both talking to each other and saying that all is working, ive realy checked the AUDIO PROPERTIES being a sound engineer, the VOLUME and CAPTURE are both on BLUETOOTH DEVICE, in CONTROL PANEL, SOUNDS, it’s also configured properly, IN DEVICE MANAGER deep in the SOUNDS PROPERTIES they are enabled ok but the VOLUME SLIDER seems muted out to 0 event he tick box, but the device tabs say all is ok. 1. How can i stop windows jumping in and taking over the rest of the install? 2. I tryed installing IBM widcomm driver , the patch didn’t work, i’ll try running from RUN CMD prompt. so far my bluetooth experience have been horrible, I dont mind having ann icon that says Anetwork device is unconected, as i have been told this is “normal” any help would be greatful. I reacently installed SP2 on my computer, which runs with XP. Since then, i had probelms. I cannot synchronize my cell phone with outlook 2002 anymore.

I have an Acer TM 803 with integrated Bluetooth.

Furthermore some programs cannot recognize my Bluetooth device. But Microsoft installed a standard driver. What can i do to solve the problem an synchronize my mobile with outlook again?!

    Thanx…

    Check out this guide:
    ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/dbt120_revB3/QIG/WinXP_servicepack2/dbt120_InstallationGuide_winxpsp2.pdf

. The procedure given works for almost all USB Bluetooth devices. You can easily remove the default Microsoft drivers and install your hardware vendor provided drivers.

Hi, maybe you would be good enough tohelp. You seem to have got to where I would like to be. I have a tdk go blue dongle and it has been great. I changed laptops. NOw I have XPSP2. I followed all TDK instructions, loading from CD, then plugged in device and had problem. Read what to do, select device in device manager and change driver - tried and rebooted. WHen it came back up the device was not there. Reinstalled device and tried to change driver. Now the usb adapter is shown under icon above bluetooth in device manager, but will not let me change driver - it says “windows cannot load BTW”. If I try and uninstall the device it says, “cannot find BTW”. If I try and update the firmware on the device it says “cannot fnd BTW”. If I try and update widcomm bluetoioth stakc it says “cannot find BTW”. If I plug the device in windows will not recognise it and provide IP address - something it always did and I need. But it can see other devices, but provides only on service “p” and this appears to do nothing.
    ANy ideas?

I hate Bill gates and all his patchy faulty crapy software……pretencious alleged Operating Systems.
Next windows update will be ” Cumulative update for user who wants to go to the toilet during download of yet another useless patch that will only help to not help but to enable spying on users easier.
Thank God Windows XP is out of my window.

Exactly the same problem and no solution? did you find one?

  42. 42 Anonymous on February 26, 2005 1:54 am

disable bluetooth services in windows xp, then rename 4 files located in winnt\system32 and winnt\system32\drivers:
    bthprops.cpl
    bthport.sys
    bthusb.sys
    fsquirt.exe

    I appended an “x” (xbthprops.cpl)
reinstalled widcomm and presto… no more xp sp2 crap.

Press Fn+F5 then if necessary turn on Bluetooth. Also, in Access IBM, see “Using Bluetooth” (do a text search on “bluetooth” to find that).

    Same problem here !
I was using Billionton Bluetooth adapter with XP for a long time. Everything was running smoothly and my life was full of joy.
Then ServicePack 2 came along !!
Now my BT deviced has been highjacked by Microsoft and can not be used for anything at all !

  49. 49 Anonymous on April 26, 2005 2:06 am

How did you manage to fix this problem? I’ve got the exact same situation and are totally lost….

  50. 50 Anonymous on April 27, 2005 7:09 am

Thanks for the fix! The soulution was way to obviouse for me?

    Solution:
1.) Install third party bt app. (Widcomm)
2.) Change BT driver in “Device Manager”
    3.) enjoy!

  55. 55 Anonymous on June 15, 2005 8:05 pm

Thanks to the above poster, I’ve been trying to disable the drivers for so long! They didn’t work for anything I tried to use them with, and they kicked in whenever I tried to install the good drivers that came with my adapter. I’m able to use bluetooth again for the first time since I got SP2.

  56. 56 Anonymous on July 1, 2005 2:59 pm

    Nope… didn’t work.

    Removed the BT device.
Tried searching the hard drive for these files… renamed them…
searched again and found they recreated themselves.
Went into safe mode and scrubbed em this time… they didn’t reappear YAY I thought.

Booted normally, installed the WIDCOMM drivers thinking this will work..
    plugged in USB BT device…
AND THE BASTARD WINDOWS DRIVERS REINSTALLED

    :-/ GGrrrr

    Any ideas guys/gals?

    Solution

    Hi

You might want to take a look at the soltion presented in:
    http://www.bluetake.com/FAQ_BTW.htm
Look at the bottom of that page, there is link for a PDF guide which is:
    http://www.bluetake.com/Manuals/BT007XBT009X/BTW_InstallationGuide_WindowsXP-SP2_EN.pdf

Or take a look at the topic “Windows XP SP2 does have some compatibility issue.” in the FAQ at:
    http://www.jaht.com/faq/bldongle-faq.htm

    I hope it helps

  59. 59 Anonymous on July 20, 2005 7:11 am

I have exactly the same problem. And that command doesn’t work with me either (not surprisingly).
I thought I was alone :-( as I kept reading “help” files that told me to go there!
I don’t have the “Bluetooth radio devices” in the “system/device manager” either. How does one get it? Did you find a solution? I’m desperate.

I am having the same problem and haven’t figured it out yet. I’ve been able to install a bluetooth mouse and GPS unit and am able to find my PDA, but cannot set the PDA up to sync with Activesync b/c of a COM port issue and I can’t change the COM port b/c I don’t have a “Bluetooth Devices” in my control panel (and yes, I have installed SP2).

    Strange.

  62. 62 Anonymous on August 15, 2005 5:12 pm

You need to install the widcomm drivers. Apparently microsoft didnt add headset support to their drivers.

  63. 63 Anonymous on August 16, 2005 7:37 am

    Got it!
Tthe driver for the 100m class 1 bluetooth device USBBTC1A can be found here:
    http://www.cadmusmicro.com/drivers_bluetooth.htm
it did take some finding had sumbled across it several months ago but just had to find it agin after formatting. You’ll need to read the pdf if ure using sp2 and may also need to update the firmware on your dongle, all in all was very helpful ney problems just ask.

(mine USBBTC1A-N but i guess the added -N is just the distributor tag hardware should be the same in any case)

    Centrios BT, how-to.

Here’s how I got the Centrios USB to work:

1- Insert CD that came with Centrios Dongle, install Centrios software.
    2- System control panel
    3- Hardware/Device manager
4- Disable Bluetooth radio (bluetooth devices)
5- Right click on Bluetooth radio, update driver
    6- Install from specific location
7- Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install
8- Click CSR USB Bluetooth device
    9- Click next
10- Keep clicking next until the end

it’ll install the CSR USB dongle as a regular USB device. Then you can use all the neat BT toys the CSR has in it’s tray icon rather than the limited M$ BT control panel app.

I am having the same issue. I have used several bluetooth dongles which ARE supposed to work with widcom (so should work with SP2) but now with SP2, I don’t get the control panel, even with run command.
Did you ever find a solution?
On one hand, the bluetooth keyboard and mouse work on it, but I have no control over the BT or ability to add any devices that require a passcode, or use PAN, etc.

  75. 75 Anonymous on May 16, 2006 9:11 pm

You have to have the Dongle BT plugged in the USB port for the Radio devices to show in Device Manager.

You can find The drivers for Billionton Bluetooth Dongle here

    Hope that helps :)

Looking for a solution to the problem of the missing control panel icon (Bluetooth Devices). So far, all I’ve seen is the system restore > re-installation of said devices, has anyone found another way yet?

    check here:

However note that this device comes with a 11:11:11:…. network adress. I am currently looking for another device. It appears billionton cheated!

Is there anyway to fix the problem of having a 11:11:11… network address? This is the case with my billionton Class 1, USBBTC1A-B USB adapter. Also mine came with a 1.6.1.4 bluesoleil software, but when I upgrade it to the 2.3.0.0, listed as a free upgrade, it becomes an evaluation version! Any help?

You can try download the Billionton USBBTC1A Bluetooth Driver from http://www.softwaredriverdownload.com/billionton_usbbtc1a_bluetooth_driver.html

Billionton website do not provide link to older driver (link broken), so often no luck there.

    Solution
Hey, I figured out how to get microsoft to use its own software to install my USB Bluetooth dongle.
Uninstall the previous software if you have already tried another program
Unplug the plug in your bluetooth dongle (or you can go to control pannel/system/device manager and scan for new hardware changes)
Windows should then detect this unknown device
Select the ‘Let windows connect to windows update’ and then click search
Eventually it found and used its own microsoft stack software
and NOW FINALLY the ‘Bluetooth Devices’ option is avaible in Control Pannel

    YAY!
    :):)

The main site does work, you just have to push ‘OK’ leaving the password field empty when you want to download the driver. :-)
