FetchLinks NewsGator plugin released

Feb 15, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

I’ve just released the first build of FetchLinks - a plugin for NewsGator which will download items from their links if they don’t have a description in the RSS feed itself.

This is one of the most frequently requested features for NewsGator, and it means that instead of an empty post in Outlook you will get the entire web page it links to. The plugin uses the same code as PopHeadlines. :)

Download it here. Update: There’s at least one newer version available - click here

Simply install it and restart Outlook. Any new items which are downloaded will be processed by the plugin. To disable and remove the plugin, just uninstall it from the Control Panel.

Enjoy! :)

Coffee-breaks sabotage employees’ abilities

Feb 14, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

Shh! Don’t tell anyone! If this were to get out…

New Scientist: Taking a coffee break at work may actually sabotage employees’ ability to do their jobs and undermine teamwork instead of boosting it, suggests new research.

Getting in with the wrong crowd

Feb 13, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

Isn’t it amazing how a single, perfectly innocent post can get you into trouble? I received this unsolicited email today. I wonder if the BBC - the source of the original story - got the same offer? Perhaps Mark Byford will be introducing some radical reforms? :)

Dear Webmaster:

.NET Memory Profiler 2.0 released

Feb 13, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

This tool is unbelievable. I’ve been using it since its freeware days, through version 1.0 and now 2.0. It was useful way back, then it got much better in 1.0, and this 2.0 update has really blown my socks off. The new features are astounding. I’ve found and squashed a couple of nasty memory leaks already (which sneaked past me with the 1.0 release) and I only downloaded it half an hour ago!

Here’s the mailshot with the details. Get it now if you do any .NET development at all!

SciTech Software is pleased to announce that .NET Memory Profiler 2.0 has just been released.

.NET Memory Profiler is a powerful tool for finding memory leaks and optimizing the memory usage of .NET Programs.

The main new features of .NET Memory Profiler 2.0 are:

  • Dispose tracker
The dispose tracker presents data about which instances are not correctly disposed and which are still reachable after having been disposed.
  • Real-time view of memory data
Information about all instance allocations, garbage collections and heap layout is presented in real-time.
  • Instance data collection
By collecting instance data, field values of instances can be presented after a heap snapshot.

Plus several other features and improvements.

For more information see the .NET Memory Profiler web site at:

http://www.scitech.se/memprofiler

A fully functional evaluation version of .NET Memory Profiler can be downloaded from:

http://www.scitech.se/memprofiler/download.htm

Release notes for v2.0:

  • New! Dispose tracker Tracks information about disposable instances.
  • New! Instance data collection. Allows field values to be shown.
  • New! Real-time view.
  • New! Fast class filter. Allows classes to be filtered based on namespace and class name.
  • New! Native memory profiling. Presents more accurate native memory information for the profiled process.
  • New! Size with children is presented in Instance Details
  • New! Memory for JITted methods are identified in the native memory view.
  • New! Inlining can optionally be enabled.
  • Fix: Is it now possible to profile processes using the server runtime (mscorsvr) on multiprocessor machines.
  • Fix: Identification of the large object heap works correctly under .NET Framework 1.1.
  • Fix: Appearance of profiler is now correct when running on high-resolution monitors.
  • Change: The selected class in the Classes view is remembered when changing filters and collecting snapshots.
  • Change: Memory usage in the profiler significantly reduced.

Best regards

Sky+ hits quarter of a million

Feb 12, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

I must get around to ditching ntl:’s dire cable TV and get a Sky+ package. Seems lots of other people are.

TechDigest: Looks like Sky+, long championed by us here at TD as a fantastic bit of kit, is finally catching on (after Sky finally dropped the ludicrous £10 a month surcharge).

floAt’s Mobile Agent scripting problems solved

Feb 12, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

My bad - I was missing Windows Script. I was sure I’d installed it ages ago, but obviously not. Like I was saying about the floAt’s Mobile Agent documentation - a link to the required download would certainly be useful. I’m a developer so I’m pretty comfortable with finding my way around MSDN, but you shouldn’t have to do that to find the components you need!

Anyway, FMA is now working nicely, and I can remotely control my laptop with my Z600! That would be all the handier if I didn’t already have a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse… But it is cool ;)

Now - wasn’t there a webcam script somewhere? I wonder if you can only use one script at a time? The UI seems to suggest so. :(

Vodablog

Feb 11, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

Bora posted an interesting message to the (now largely abandoned) BlogX forum on GotDotNet. I’m a Vodafone subscriber in the UK, so I’m having a go with Vodablog.com. Looks quite good, and is basically a .NET technology showcase. Cool! I hope some of his work finds its way into .Text - Vodablog itself looks quite impressive.

Should you wish to do so, you can find my vodablog here (rss). I’ve already sent a couple of pictures but they haven’t shown up yet…

Hi,
I have developed .NET Based moblogging service for Microsoft-Vodafone Web Services Contest.
You can create a moblog at vodablog.com.
It has some unique features such as video and image conversion for MMS, DRM support, MMS sending and MMS&SMS Mobile XML Web Services..
I would lile to share some of the implementations (if someone is interested) in order to enhance .NET Based blogging community.

Process Explorer - even better?

Feb 11, 2004 by Graeme in Uncategorized

Today I realised that you can configure Process Explorer to replace Task Manager, meaning you can fire it up with a quick three-finger salute! It does everything Task Manager can, and a whole lot more.
